Niger says it foils coup attempt days before presidential transition

A military unit tried to seize the presidential palace in Niger’s capital Niamey overnight in an attempted coup but it was pushed back and order has been restored, the government said on Wednesday, days before a handover of power.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, stated this while briefing newsmen at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.
