Union Berlin boss wants Taiwo Awoniyi included in Super Eagles’ AFCON squad

Ex-Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored for the third straight game as Union Berlin shared four goals with Hoffenheim at the PreZero Arena.

Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer hopes Taiwo Awoniyi will be part of Nigeria’s squad to the 2021 Africa Nations Cup in Cameroon.

The striker was called up for Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying double-header against the Central African Republic in October but failed to make the squad for this month’s games against Liberia and Cape Verde.

The 24-year-old has however continued to impress for Union Berlin, scoring the opener in Sunday’s 2-0 derby win against Hertha Berlin.

The goal was Awoniyi’s ninth in the Bundesliga this season.

“We don’t worry about it and of course we have it on our radar,” Fischer told

“What could be nicer than representing your country? Even if it doesn’t help us, we would be happy for Taiwo.”

Fischer also believes Awoniyi has developed and improved compared to last season through constant practice.

“He has learned to stay calm in the pit and can withstand the pressure better there. I do believe that Taiwo has worked on itself,” he added.
