Captain Rita Chikwelu has maintained the Super Falcons will not underrate Group B bottom team Equatorial Guinea when both teams clash today in a decisive 2018 AWCON group game in Cape Coast.
Eight-time champions Nigeria are second in the group with three points, behind leaders South Africa who have already recorded six points.
Equatorial Guinea are without any points and have let in a whooping 12 goals thus far.
But experienced midfielder Chikwelu insisted the Falcons will not take the two-time African champions lightly because they hope to qualify for the semifinals.
“We are giving Equatorial Guinea maximum respect they deserve because they are two-time champions,” she said.
“We are not underrating any team as far as this tournament is concerned.
“We are going to do all it takes against them (Equatorial Guinea). It has never been easy against them and we are prepared for that.”
Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby said the target is to advance to the knockout rounds of the AWCON.
“We will do our best to secure our place in the semifinals and that will be with a victory against Equatorial Guinea,” he said.
Cameroon won Group A with Mali upsetting hosts Ghana to finish as runners-up.
The winners of Group B most likely to be South Africa will battle Mali, while Cameroon face the runners-up in Group B, most likely Nigeria.
Kick-off time today is 5pm.
