Mainz narrowly missed out on Taiwo Awoniyi’s deal – sporting director

Borussia Monchengladbach coach Adi Hutter believes his team should have committed a professional foul to stop Taiwo Awoniyi from scoring in Union Berlin's 2-1 win on Sunday in the Bundesliga game at An der Alten Forsterei Stadium.

FSV Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel has revealed that Liverpool made it difficult for them to sign Super Eagles and Union Berlin forward, Tawio Awoniyi this summer.

Awoniyi spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Mainz from Liverpool, where he scored one goal in 12 appearances in all competitions.

However, Heidel in an interview with Rheinfalz stated that the Reds failed to give them a discount to sign the Nigerian international.

“I’ve always liked him, as you have seen, rightly,” Heidel said about Awoniyi, as per Rheinfalz.

“He was on the market, but we couldn’t finance the deal.

“We talked about him, but I didn’t get a discount.”
