Lobi Stars face a difficult task to qualify for the group stage of the 2019 CAF Champions League after they fell 3-1 at Gor Mahia of Kenya today.
The Nigerian representatives will now need at least 2-0 in the return leg next weekend to progress in this competition and even though this is achievable, coach Solomon Ogbeide admitted his team were “wasteful” in the previous round against UMS de Loum of Cameroon.
The Kenyans bombarded Lobi Stars for Rwanda international Jacques Tuyisenge to open scoring after just seven minutes.
Sammy Onyango doubled Gor Mahia’s lead after a defensive blunder as Lobi Stars goalkeeper Ospino Egbe pulled off several saves to keep the Makurdi in the game.
Striker Samad Kadiri then pulled a goal back for Lobi Stars only for Gor Mahia to score a third goal moments later.
There were no goals after the break as Lobi Stars chased to further reduce the deficit.
Experienced striker David Tyavkase was later introduced for Ezekiel Mbah, but there will be no goals in this half.
