Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned from his position of Barcelona president today and dropped a bombshell concerning the new European Super League Fifa intends to implement in the next few years. The former Catalan president stated that he accepted Barcelona’s participation in the Super League as the club’s financial position obliged. This decision is Bartomeu’s last as Barcelona president, alongside the acceptance of the new Club World Cup format.
Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, was seemingly enraged at the sight of losing Barcelona, one of the top two sides in La Liga. The money-driven president has bashed Barcelona’s former president and heavily criticised the decision. Calling the Super League a ‘Fantasy League’ has just shown Tebas’ disgust at the new Fifa competition’s idea. He also insulted Bartomeu’s football knowledge, saying the Catalan entrepreneur “lacked football knowledge on all fronts”.
“Bartomeu’s last decision is his participation in a fantasy league, destroying Barcelona, and which basically confirms his lack of football knowledge on all fronts.”Javier Tebas in response to Bartomeu’s European Super League statement
Tebas isn’t an angel either as he also makes a handful of money-driven decisions concerning Spanish competitions. This is a president who moved the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia every January, a schedule that will tire footballers and the new format isn’t that great either. Tebas’ criticism comes after he knows he’s going to lose a hefty sum of money due to Barça moving along with the European Super League’s clubs.
