There is a possibility that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could return to full team training today, according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds faced Blackpool in a pre-season clash on the weekend. Liverpool were 7-2 winners at Anfield.
Henderson did not feature in the game as he was still recovering from his knee injury.
Post-game, Klopp stated that Henderson could “probably” feature in a football match.
Klopp also added that Henderson will “probably” return to full team training today.
“Obviously Hendo was desperate to play a few minutes today as well, but it makes no real sense because he had to do an important session today for him,” Klopp told the club’s official website.
“If he would have played today, 10 minutes or so would have probably been OK. But that makes no sense. So that was not possible, but he trained in big parts of this week and will probably join full team training next Tuesday.
“We will see how he develops, [there are] a few days until Leeds, how the boys come back from the national teams. A lot of open questions still, but a few hopefully we can answer today.”
Klopp’s comments highlight that Henderson is not far off being fully fit, which is good news considering Liverpool’s first game of the new Premier League season is this weekend. The Reds are set to face Leeds United.
It would be a boost to have Henderson available for the Leeds United clash. He is the captain after all.
If Henderson is deemed fit enough to play, it would be fair to assume that he won’t start. He has had no pre-season. It would actually be handy to have Henderson on the bench.
We still remember Henderson coming off the bench against Southampton back in the 2018-19 Premier League season.
Henderson had an impact. He scored Liverpool’s third goal of the game, which ensured the Reds claimed a 3-1 victory at St Mary’s.
Henderson’s goal put the game to bed, as Liverpool only had a 2-1 lead at the time. The point being is that Henderson has shown in the past that he can impact a football match from the bench.
We will have to wait and see if Henderson can get through training this week. If he can, he could feature against Leeds United.
