Jurgen Klopp refused to be drawn on speculation linking Liverpool with a move for Thiago Alcantara, despite Bayern Munich admitting the midfielder could be sold this summer.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for the Spain international who has been tipped to leave the Bundesliga champions this summer, the 29-year-old entering the final year of his contract and reportedly keen on a new challenge after seven seasons in Munich.

The former Barcelona star has won seven consecutive Bundesliga titles since moving to the Allianz Arena and would add a touch of class to the Premier League champion’s midfield, though Klopp was coy on the speculation that a Merseyside move for Thiago was imminent.

“Would you be surprised if I didn’t answer? I never answer this type of question!” Klopp told his press conference after his sides 2-0 win over Aston Villa yesterday.

“He’s a really good player I like a lot but I like many others out there. That’s all I have to say about him.”

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has admitted Thiago could be sold to avoid losing the player on a free transfer, the star having indicated a desire for a new challenge and believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

“He is a top boy on and off the pitch,” Rummenigge said.

”We had serious negotiations with him and fulfilled all of his wishes. But it looks like he might want to do something new again at the end of his career.

”We don’t want to lose him for free.

“We never had any contact with Liverpool. If he wants to go there, we will have to deal with it.”
