Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita are all set to miss their Champions League clash with FC Midtjylland on Tuesday night.
Klopp says that all three players need more time to fully recover from their respective injuries. It looks unlikely at this time that any of them will be in the squad against the Danish side.
The Athletic’s James Pearce relayed Klopp’s comments to Twitter.
Whilst Thiago, Keita and Matip are good players in their own right – with all of them having started Premier League games this season – Liverpool have still been able to win their last two games without any of them. They won 1-0 away to Ajax and beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Premier League, showing that they are capable of winning of games without them – even in the Champions League.
Matip’s continued absence does mean that Fabinho will need to move to centre-back again alongside Joe Gomez, with Virgil van Dijk also out injured. Fabinho played in the defence against Ajax and put in a huge performance as Liverpool kept a clean sheet and came away with the three points. He recorded a WhoScored rating of 8.71, winning three aerial battles, four tackles and making four interceptions and nine clearances next to Gomez.
That being said, the more options available to Jurgen Klopp the better so, hopefully, they will be able to come back as quickly as possible in the coming weeks. If Liverpool suffer further injuries to other players, they could be needed to come back in and start. Klopp may be able to provide another update over their availability ahead of their next Premier League match at the weekend.
