Goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has assured the country he will give his best should he be handed the opportunity to start in goal for the Super Eagles against home team South Africa in today’s important 2019 AFCON.
Injury to No 1 choice Francis Uzoho has sparked off a healthy rivalry between Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi and Theophilus Afelokhai this week in training camp.
Ezenwa said: “I have been in goal before, it’s not new to me, I kept against Cameroon in the (World Cup) double header and if I am given the opportunity to do that again, I can replicate that same form.
“This is a chance to show I can do it and I am ever ready to grab it with my both hands.”
The former Flying Eagles goalkeeper spoke of the competition with Akpeyi and Afelokhai in camp.
“My fellow colleagues have been great in their different ways – Afelokhai is my team mate at Enyimba, while Daniel Akpeyi has done well at Chippa United of South Africa. These are all good goalkeepers with great character.
“Whoever emerges as No 1 for this match will definitely do well.
“My honest prayer and what matters most is that we should carry the day regardless of whoever will be in goal for the match.”
