Pundit Ian Wright said in the aftermath of England’s 5-0 victory over Albania that Chelsea fullback Reece James is keeping Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the team.
James set up England’s first goal of the night and helped the Three Lions keep a clean sheet before making way for Alexander-Arnold with just over 10 minutes to go in the game.
Used as a right-wingback at Wembley Stadium, James has started the season strongly for club and country and Wright used the fact that James was starting ahead of the Liverpool star as a sign of how good he is playing at the moment.
“He’s keeping someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold out, who is a fantastic player himself,” Wright told ITV Sport.
“He’s got everything. His delivery is amazing, his closing down.
“He’s got the ability and strength to progress the ball, he’s so combative. He’s a super player.”
The other pundits in the studio agreed with the ex-Arsenal striker’s opinion, hailing James’ display on Friday night.
Alexander-Arnold missed out on the 2020 European Championships having picked up an injury in a friendly against Austria, weeks before the tournament kicked off.
