Gareth Southgate provides Luke Shaw, Mason Mount injury updates

At Jose Mourinho's new home, the Stadio Olimpico, Luke Shaw, chose the perfect setting for his latest riposte to his former boss with two assists in England's 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine to reach the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

Luke Shaw and Mason Mount both sat out England’s rousing win over Albania on Friday night and are now ‘very unlikely’ to play against San Marino on Monday as well, confirmed Gareth Southgate.

The Manchester United and Chelsea men were not missed as Harry Kane scored a hat-trick and both Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson netted in a comfortable 5-0 victory.

There was hope that both would return for Monday’s contest, though, after Shaw suffered a concussion in the Manchester derby last weekend and Mount had his wisdom teeth removed earlier in the week.

Southgate has now confirmed that we should not expect to see either man on Monday night, with neither recovering in time to play in the final World Cup qualifier.

‘Luke and Mason, very unlikely now,’ Southgate said in a post-match press conference on Friday night. ‘I think we’re going to run out of time with those two.’

It is equally unlikely that Shaw and Mount will still be out at the weekend when Chelsea and Manchester United are in action again.

The Blues travel to Leicester City on Saturday lunchtime, with the Red Devils going to Watford at 3 pm on the same day.

Southgate also confirmed that ‘we will make changes, definitely’ to the starting XI in San Marino with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Emile Smith Rowe, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka all hoping to come in.

England have still not guaranteed qualification to Qatar with one game to go, but only need a draw in San Marino to secure their spot.
