Finidi George takes over from Fatai Osho as Enyimba manager

Nigeria’s most successful domestic club in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) era Enyimba International FC of Aba have effected a change of managers at the technical side of the club with the appointment of George Finidi as the team’s new Technical Adviser.

The ex-Nigerian international takes over from the astute coach Fatai Osho and will be in the team’s dugout for the 2021/2022 campaign. Recall that Osho had led the Peoples’ Elephant of Aba to a second-place finish in the NPFL last season.

Finidi will be expected to keep that level of performance going and begin the process that will see the Aba Warriors challenging for honours on the continental stage again to keep the status that they have earned over the years going into the future.

Enyimba FC, with their base in Aba, was founded in 1976 and with an insurmountable spirit rose to reckon in the 2000s to become a domestic and continental powerhouse of football.

Considered as the most successful Nigerian football club currently in the NPFL, Enyimba has lifted two African Champions League titles, has claimed eight Nigerian championships, more than any other domestic side. And since 2001, they have taken the Federation Cups on four occasions.

The Aba club are now counting on the managerial chops of Finidi, who was among the first Nigerian players to achieve success in Europe, to bring an extra layer of professionalism to the dugout for them in Aba. Finidi won three Eredivisie titles, the 1995 UEFA Champions League, the European Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup with Ajax.

As part of the Super Eagles squad, the 50-year-old was capped 62 times from 1991 to 2002 and won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia with the team. In 2004, he retired from active football and dedicated himself to actualizing his coaching ambitions.

After acquiring a UEFA B license, Finidi, who had worked with the youth team of his former Spanish club Real Mallorca, was initially linked with the Golden Eaglets coaching role before the Enyimba announcement. And, it is with the Warriors of Aba that he will begin to demonstrate his technical ability.
