The Democratic Republic of Congo advanced to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers’ play-off stage after defeating Benin 2-0 in a Group J top-of-the-table showdown in Kinshasa.

With the win, Les Leopards moved to the top of the group with 11 points, one point ahead of Benin. Tanzania and Madagascar played to a 1-1 tie in the other group match.

Benin just needed a point in the Congolese capital to qualify for the play-off round going into this match, but they were behind after just 10 minutes. After being hauled back inside the box, Dieumerci Mbokani dusted himself off and converted from the penalty spot.

Despite having several chances, the Congolese failed to add to their first goal in the initial 45 minutes of the encounter, struggling as they did to make sure not to concede either.

Benin came back in the second half with a plan to get back into the game and went on the attack right away. However, when Jodel Dossou threaded his way into the box four minutes after the restart, his final attempt hit the side netting.

Still, the Beninoise team kept pushing forward, knowing that a draw would put them one step closer to a dream spot in the playoffs for Qatar.

With a quarter of an hour remaining, their hopes were dashed when Ben Malango scored from the edge of the six-yard box after rising to meet a Dieumerci Amale cross from the right.

DR Congo kept a tight grip on the game to secure their victory and a place in the play-offs.
