Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has opened up on how he was sacked by the club.

Rodgers arrived at Liverpool in 2012, but he was sacked three years later. The decision was announced after Liverpool drew 1-1 with Everton at Goodison Park in 2015.

The Northern Irishman has stated that he was unaware of what was going on behind the scenes. He first heard about the news when FSG chief Mike Gordon gave him a call.

Rodgers spoke to The Beautiful Game Podcast: “There were a few stories but I didn’t know a thing. Clearly the decision was (already) made but I wasn’t aware of it.

“The first I spoke to the ownership was with Mike Gordon on the drive back home after the game.

“When I arrived at the training ground, I got in the car and I was driving home and I got the call from Mike. That was the first time I knew.

“I thanked them for it, for the experience, I knew where they were coming from and we parted on good terms. We both moved on.”

It is a real shame that Rodgers could not leave his mark on the football club. The reality is, he was very close to doing so in the 2013/14 season.

Liverpool fell short in the Premier League that season, but only by a couple of points to Manchester City.

Had Rodgers claimed that title, he would be remembered as a Liverpool legend. The club had not won a domestic league title for 24 years at that particular stage.

It was just not meant to be in the end. However, I remember the 2013-14 season for all the right reasons. It was so entertaining, and that was because Liverpool were right in the hunt for a maiden Premier League title.
