NBBF report accuses secretary-general of blackmail

The internal rumblings within the ranks of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) have devolved further with a report on the federation’s website that pointed to a flurry of letters and documents leaving the office of the NBBF Secretary-General, Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi, to intended external recipients.

The discovery alleges that these internal documents were initially sent to Facebook before being forwarded to those third parties according to an intended plan of action to destabilise the Federation’s progress for their nefarious purposes.

Without mincing words, the report accused Olabisi of attempting to blackmail the caretaker chairman, Ahaji Musa Kida, into paying N15 million through one of her colleagues in the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD), just before the elections started.

The money was intended to buy Olabisi a house and to have her pledge her loyalty to Kida. However, according to the report, Kida called her bluff and she did not take kindly to that, leading to the sabotage with the letters and documents.

The report further claimed Olabisi was in cahoots with a top director in the Federations and Elite Athletes Department (FEAD), who the report neglected to name, but whose relationship with the NBBF secretary-general is becoming a hot topic at the sports ministry.

In its insistence to back the federation, the report alleged that the plot to remove the caretaker chairmen reached a point of no return when Olabisi signed a letter dissolving the caretaker committee. It was an over-reach on her part as such a decision can only be taken by the minister, according to the report.

It further claimed that the FMYSD, through FEAD, was fighting alongside the saboteurs in hopes the monies owed Kida would not be paid from the coffers of the sports ministry. This, according to the authors of the report, will fail as they will reveal “the bitter truth about the funding of Nigeria basketball for the last 4 years”.

Arrangements have been concluded to hold the NBBF Elective Congress in Benin on October 30.
