Twenty-two-year-old British backpacker Grace Millane, who had been missing in New Zealand since last week, was murdered, police said on Saturday.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard made this known at a news conference in Auckland.
“Sadly the evidence we have gathered to this point of the enquiry has established that this is a homicide.
“A 26-year-old man located in Auckland was speaking with police about the murder and a vehicle of interest had been secured.
“We still do not know where Grace is, we are determined to find her and return her to her family,’’ Beard added.
Police said earlier that they held grave fears for the English tourist, who arrived in New Zealand two weeks ago.
Millane, the daughter of English property developer, David Millane, had not been seen since leaving her hostel in Auckland last Saturday.
Beard said Millane’s family had been informed of the development and were “devastated’’.
