Donald Trump has lashed out at the late Secretary of State and Defence Chief, General Colin Powell, who died on Monday.
The former President wrote what many have come to regard as a rather controversial tribute to the 84-year-old, who died from COVID-19 complications.
The tribute was filled with shades before he ended with, “but anyway, may he rest in peace!”
Trump sarcastically commented on how Powell’s death was treated “so beautifully” by the “fake” media, before mocking the late politician as a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only).
He said: “Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes in Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated to death so beautifully by the Fake News Media.”
“Hope that happens to me someday,” Trump added.
“He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!”
Social media users were disgusted by the former President’s “classless” statement and took to Twitter to express their outrage.
One user tweeted: “Whenever Donald Trump knows he can’t live up to some other person’s life he tries to bring them down to his level with insults. That’s all this is. The ramblings of a weak insecure man. He couldn’t walk two steps in Colin Powell’s shoes.”
Another wrote: “Keeping it classy as always,” another added. “You got to appreciate how consistent Trump is…always making it about himself. Toxic narcissism.”
Yet another tweeted: “Trump, as always, is jealous of the very favourable coverage of the life and accomplishments of Colin Powell. Trump knows that he will not be remembered the same way.”
One George Perrett said: “This is a classless statement by President Trump – a petulant, unforced error. General Powell served this country w/distinction for over 4 decades, in combat & rising to the highest levels of the US military & becoming SOS, overcoming obstacles that others will never face. FACT.”
