North Korea on Monday rejected an offer of humanitarian aid by a South Korean organisation that wants to help combat malaria in regions between the two countries,’’ the report said.

North Korea told the South Korean government that the help was refused because of Seoul’s support for the UN Security Council’s latest resolution regarding North Korea’s missile programme.

The organisation now wants to deliver the aid at a later date while the UN Security Council voted to sharpen sanctions against North Korea on Friday after a series of missile launches in recent weeks.

The 15-member council voted on a resolution to impose travel bans and asset freezes on a new list of 14 North Korean officials.

Four entities, including the national Koryo Bank, are also subject to a global asset freeze under the resolution.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley reiterated calls for a global severing of diplomatic ties with Pyongyang and a complete cessation of trading with the country, which previous Security Council resolutions have prohibited.

However, the approval of the Korean Sharing Movement’s application for aid distribution was seen as a sign that President Moon Jae In’s new liberal government is moving to approach North Korea, despite tensions over Pyongyang’s weapons programmes.

The previous government had suspended virtually all civilian exchanges between South and North Korea in January 2016 when Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test.
