Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Lagos East Senatorial District by-election, Mr Tokunbo Abiru, has promised to honour the legacies left behind by past Senators who have occupied the seat in the past.
Abiru said this at the Kosofe APC Stakeholders meeting, which took place at Centre for Management Development (CMD) premises at Magodo, Lagos on Friday, September 18.
Speaking at the event, which was the official presentation of Tokunbo Abiru and Femi Saheed as APC’s candidates for the vacant Lagos East senatorial seat and Kosofe Constituency II seat respectively, Abiru said, “The result of the direct primaries on September 3, was simply a vote of confidence, and when people do you a huge favour like that, you must be grateful, not disappoint them or break that trust they have in you.
“I intend to work hand in hand with other elected officials for the upliftment of the state and the good of Nigeria so that we can all enjoy the dividends of democracy.
“Secondly, by the grace of God, I will honour the legacies of those that came before me, like my father, late Hon. Justice Mudashiru Akanbi Olatunji Abiru. Others include Senator Adesegun Ogunlewe, Senator Bareehu Ashafa and the late Senator Bayo Osinowo. With all those who have come before me and done so well, I have no choice but to also do well.”
He further stated that one of the qualities he would bring to the table as a senator is quality representation. “This job requires one to be adequately prepared, so I will use all the competencies I have acquired in the last few decades as an economist, chartered accountant, banker, the executive director of the largest bank in Nigeria; First Bank and as MD, Polaris Bank. That is why I said I am bringing quality representation to the table.”
He also revealed that having just finished his assignment by CBN at Polaris Bank, he is confident of his expertise and ability to do the job.
He stated that Polaris Bank had 4 million customers at the time he took over and the downfall of the bank would have been catastrophic.
According to him, the expertise, which was used to rescue the bank is what he would be bringing to the role of Senator for Lagos East.
Among other things, he promised to drive infrastructure to the senatorial district, while ensuring that Lagos State achieves special status and the Federal Government begins to do much more for the state.
Saheed on his part, while promising to be the best man for the job, urged party members to become canvassers for the party, come election day.
In attendance were APC stalwarts like the Vice Chairman, Lagos APC, Chief Kaoli Olusanya, who stated while presenting the candidates that youths and students would find a worthy role model in Abiru and Saheed.
Others like Hon. Segun Olulade, Omooba Rotimi Agunsoye, Chief Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Mayor Dele Osinowo, Hon. Abiodun Aigbe, and Olusesan Daini were among those on hand to endorse the candidates.
