The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone C, has declared support for Senate President Bukola Saraki, as he contests his Kwara Central Senatorial District seat at the general election this weekend.
The NANS in the zone which comprises states of the North Central and North East and the Federal Capital Territory said it supported Saraki because of his youth-oriented programmes.
The students said the politician has made an invaluable contribution to development of education in his state, Kwara, and the nation in general.
Kayode Adebayo, NANS Public Relations Officer (PRO), who spoke on behalf of the association at a press conference in Ilorin said the students were supporting “a continuity in quality representation, educational development, good governance and above all, prompt payment of scholarships to the indigenes and indigent students studying in various institutions in Nigeria and abroad.”
Adebayo who said Saraki gives a regular scholarship award explained that the gesture gives the students a conviction that the politician is a considerate leader who knows where the shoe pinches his people.
He stated, “We as students have more than a passing interest in 2019 general elections, particularly as regards Kwara State. We want a square peg in a square hole and we have weighed candidates of each party in the Kwara Central senatorial race. We came to the conclusion that the best man for the job is the candidate of the PDP, Dr. Bukola Saraki. This is due to his impressive scholarship award programme and experience in public service.
“We decided to support Dr. Saraki and all candidates of the PDP in the forthcoming general elections because we have a strong belief from all indications that Senator Saraki has true love and affection for the well-being of students and youths in general.
“His contributions to the human and educational development in the state include but not limited to annual procurement of JAMB and SSCE forms to the less privileged, scholarship to the indigent students, building and renovation of two classrooms in each of the wards in Kwara Central Senatorial District among others.”
Adebayo also declared support of the students for the governorship candidate of the PDP in Kwara state, Razak Atinwa, whom he said has served the state in numerous capacities meritoriously.
He described Atunwa as the most qualified among the governorship candidates in the state saying the candidate has demonstrated sterling quality of honesty, fairness and thoughtfulness in capacities he has served.
