An Abuja-based group, Equity International Initiative, has called on the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the forthcoming 2019 general election is free, fair and credible.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the country director, Equity International Initiative, Mr. Chris Iyama, stated that the group was committed to safeguarding human rights, religious freedom and increased citizen’s participation in governance.
“We are civil society organisation that promote religion freedom and tolerance on governance, capacity building and for citizens to be able to engage in the electoral processes decisively.
“As we all know, the 2019 general election is around the corner and we don’t want a situation whereby citizens who queue in the sun will not be allowed to vote. A research we conducted with the support from United States Agency in United Development shows that 1.6m names of citizens were either deliberately omitted from voter register. So, we call on INEC to look into that.”
Iyama also called on the Nigeria army not allow the citizens suffer for the crime they did not commit and that they should not allow themselves to be used by politicians for selfish reasons.
