Delegates have commenced voting in the State Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to elect officials that would pilot the affairs of the party in Abia over the next three years.
A total of 920 delegates that had earlier emerged from the ward congress held in all the 184 wards of the state are taking part in the exercise taking place at the sprawling Chidiebere Motors Arena Ugwunchara Umuahia.
Chairman of the State Congress Committee for Abia, Rt Hon Kolawole Babatunde led the seven-man committee into the venue of the congress at about 10.00 am and addressed delegates before voting started.
“I want to assure you that what we’re going to do here today will be transparent,” he said, adding, “We’re not doing anything behind a closed door.”
Representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from both the Abuja headquarters and the Abia State office are on hand to witness the state congress which is going on peacefully.
Tight security is noticeable around and within the venue with regular police, special police unit and DSS personnel keeping watch over the proceedings.
