Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the people of the South East to vote for the Presidential candidate of PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, during the 2019 February presidential election, stating that Igbo would be the greatest beneficiary under the Federal Government if Atiku wins.
Earlier, the aggrieved members of APGA across the South East who later formed the New APGA and the South East Association of Town Unions made similar calls for the support of Atiku and Obi 2019 Presidential and Vice Presidential bid, respectively.
Obi who made the call on Monday in Owerri during a combined leadership meeting of N-APGA and the Association of South East Town Unions, said that the people of the South East must contribute in the genuine efforts of Atiku’s plan to rebuild and unit the South and the Northern Nigeria again.
“This is an opportunity for the Igbo to really be part of the leadership of this nation. Today, we are not in any meaningful ministry or any Igbo man part of the military hierarchy; we have been so relegated to the background in the governance of this country. While we talk of dignity of the Igbo people, we must be willing to sacrifice for the future.”
“The last time an Igbo was elected Vice President was 40 years ago in the person of late Dr. Alex Ekwueme and we knew the benefits that accrued to the South East. We need to rebuild the South East and I cannot be in government for four years and the South East roads remain as terrible as they are now. So, we need to rebuild the East and the country,” Obi said.
Speaking on behalf of N-APGA, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho, former Minister of Interior and Imo State governorship candidate of APGA in 2015 general elections, stated that stakeholders of the party (N-APGA) have decided to support the Imo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic party, Hon. Emeka Ihiedioha and Atiku Abubakar in the presidential election.
He revealed that it was a resolve of N-APGA not to dissolve into the Peoples Democratic Party, but because of the circumstances in which the party has found itself.
“Today the main stakeholders of APGA have left the party and formed the N-APGA following the decision of the National leadership of the party to sell the governorship ticket and the stakeholders of the party have decided to rebuild the party for subsequent elections in 2023.
“We the leaders of the N-APGA have therefore decided to support Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 governorship election with all the resources at our disposal.
“We have also resolved to back Atiku Abubakar who in his wisdom chose our brother as his running mate in spite of pressure on him to take somebody from the South West. We have set up a committee to ensure that both Atiku Abubakar and Ihedioha emerge as both the president and governor respectively,” he said.
Briefly in the meeting which lasted less than an hour, the President of the Association of South East Town Unions, Emeka Diwe, said that it is in the interest of the people of the South East to support the Atiku /Obi ticket.
“Atiku and Obi’s ticket will give the people of South East the opportunities to fuse back to the main stream Nigerian politics,” he said
