Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in next year’s election, Alhaji Umar Mohammed Nasko, has continued to enjoy more support from citizens with the recent declaration by Fulani community to vote for the party and its candidate, Umar Nasko in 2019.
The Fulanis from the three senatorial zones, under the auspices of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Niger state branch, said they decided to support PDP because the Governor Abubakar Sani Bello-led All Progressive Congress (APC) administration did not carry the Fulanis along.
Hundreds of MACBAN members, at Niger PDP state secretariat, Minna chanting pro-PDP slogan said the incumbent Governor, Sani Bello who is seeking for a 2nd term in 2019 never accorded the Fulani community recognition hence their support for Umar Nasko and other aspirants of the same party platform.
Chairman of MACBAN in Niger State, Alhaji Diko Shakolo, was flanked by other zonal leaders including; Alhaji Ibrahim Lapai from Zone ‘A’, Alhaji Hashimu Rebé from zone ‘B’ and Alhaji Abubakar Addau for zone ‘C’ and a representative of Women, Hajia Fatima Bello.
They stormed the state PDP secretariat in Minna where they pledged their support and loyalty and those of their members to Alhaji Umar Nasko and the PDP and also promised to work for the success of the PDP Presidential candidate and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
All MACBAN zonal leaders during the short decamping ceremony took turns to assure the PDP and its governorship candidate, Umar Nasko and other party candidates of their support in next year’s general election, ‘because the APC government in the state had failed them’.
Alhaji Diko Shakolo said, “We have a brighter future under the PDP, when the PDP was in government our children were going to school, our animals were being vaccinated free of charge and we have a say in the previous government”.
Responding to the hundreds of Fulanis, the PDP Governorship candidate, Alhaji Umar Nasko assured the Fulani community in Niger state that they would be adequately represented if he emerges victorious in 2019.
“Instead of having a Special Adviser like we gave you in the last PDP administration you will get a full commissioner position for the first time”, Nasko promised as he assured the Fulani’s that the nomadic schools that were opened across the state by the last PDP government but now operating skeletally would be revamped.
All Nomadic schools which are not operating optimally due to abandonment will be resuscitated and made to function very well, Nasko said as reiterated his decision not to serve more than a single term of four years to allow for governorship to shift to the Niger-south (zone ‘A’) in line with the PDPs’ zoning policy in the state.
The Niger state PDP standard bearer however reminded the Fulani community on the need to obtain their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) from INEC office as the only power through which to actualize their civic responsibility of voting candidates of their choice in 2019.
Umar Nasko appealed to the Fulanis and other eligible voters in Niger state who are yet to get their PVCs for next year’s election on the need to do the needful, saying, “There are a large number of PVCs lying at the INEC office unclaimed”.
Niger State PDP chairman, Alhaji Tanko Beji in his remarks described the endorsement of Umar Nasko and the PDP by the Fulani’s is a positive signal for the party, saying, “With this support we are sure of getting a large chunk of voters from the Fulani’s who are known to be straightforward and frank in all their decisions”.
Among prominent PDP personalities at the event included; the gubernatorial running mate, Alhaji Mohammed Ndayako and the Director General of the Umar Nasko Gubernatorial Campaign Organization, Alhaji Abdullhai Kwatu.
