Shingles may result from poorly treated chicken pox – physician

A physician, Dr Olakunle Omoteemi, has revealed that one of the causes of shingles may be connected to chickenpox infection whose virus remained dormant in the body after healing.

According to Dr Omoteemi, the virus, Varicella-Zoster, which is responsible for chickenpox infection remains in the human body and may reactivate to cause the painful rash known as shingles or Herpes Zoster.

In a chat with DAILY POST, the physician noted that shingles rash, which is termed dermatomal distribution, is usually painful, may contain fluid in blisters and mostly occurs on one part of the body.

He advised Nigerians who are yet to be vaccinated against chickenpox to do so because it is a contagious disease that hibernates to later resurface as shingles.

“A chickenpox vaccine in childhood or a shingles vaccine as an adult can minimise the risk of developing shingles.

“For those who have shingles already, you may require antiviral pills, pain relievers, and anti-itching medications,” he said.

He also counselled against the use of herbal remedies in the treatment of chickenpox adding that medical research has shown that shingles are caused by viruses that remain recluse for years before it comes back to life again.
