The Wife of the Oyo state governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, says the state government remains determined to protect the rights of widows and also empower them to face challenges of life.
A statement from the Office of the governor’s wife, on Wednesday in Ibadan, indicated that she said this in commemoration of the 2020 International Widow’s Day.
Makinde noted that the present government in the state had the interest of widows at heart and would continue to make policies to empower them.
According to her, the welfare of widows remain a priority for the government of Oyo State.
“Widows, all over the world, face a lot of hardship such as, getting their daily needs and to care for their children.
“In some cases, widows are forced to partake in harmful and degrading traditional practices.
“As widows struggle to meet their daily needs in developing countries like Nigeria, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, their basic need for survival has increased.
“So, today, as we celebrate widows, we call for more solid plans; they can benefit from and be empowered so as to provide for themselves and their children,” She said.
She further encouraged widows to boost their self-worth instead of resorting to self-pity.
The governor’s wife used the occasion to present food items such as rice, beans, vegetable oil and cash to some widows in attendance.
