Staff of the ministry of science and technology yesterday urged the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, to redeploy the Permanent secretary, Dr (Mrs.) Amina Shamaki, from the ministry.
The workers under the Joint Union Council of Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST) made the demands during a protest in Abuja on Thursday over an alleged unpaid training and other allowances.
The protesters who were shouting “Shamaki must go” besieged her office and disrupted official activities.
Chairman of the Union, Comrade Christian Usino, however, informed reporters that after the protest, the leadership of the workers were invited into a meeting with the minister and the Head of Service.
He said though the workers had relaxed the protest, they were adamant that the permanent secretary should be redeployed.
His words: “We have relaxed the protest. But we are waiting for the outcome of our meeting with the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita and the minister of science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.
“The protest was necessitated in the first place because our rights were being encroached upon. So our demand was for her to go and they have assured us that she is going. She has to leave us; we don’t need her kind of person.
“She doesn’t give us our rights such as staff welfare and other necessary demand of the staffs. In fact, there are lots things that make up this welfare I mentioned and most especially is that she deny us departmental projects that actually promotes the image of the ministry.”
