Kebbi government still owes gratuities – activist

Retired Maj. Rabi’u Kamba, Special Adviser to Gov. Abubakar Bagudu on Security, presented the items to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Division at a ceremony in Birnin Kebbi.

An activist and leader of Kebbi State pensioners pressure group Alhaji Babangida Garba Gwandu while reacting to a statement credited to his excellency Senator Atiku Bagudu said that the Kebbi government under Bagudu is still owing a huge debt of gratuities, Gwandu who described the claim as unfortunate stated that civil servants who retired from 2020 and 2021 have not been given one naira as benefits.

He disclosed that aside from debt of gratuities Bagudu is yet to review pensions even as it has already been approved by president Muhammadu Buhari.

Gwandu noted that such attitudes of refusing to pay gratuities and review pension is fuelling corruption as serving civil servants in juicy positions will dip their hands into public coffers to prepare for their retirements ” since they know they will one day drop the baton and are seeing the way government is treating retirees no doubt they will arm themselves in order to survive the remaining years after service he said.

He expressed dismay that, despite the bailout given to the Kebbi state government to completely settle debts of gratuities it inherited from the Nasamu government the governor refused to do so and could not offer an explanation on how and what he did with the funds, he appealed to him to save retirees who silently dying.

It will be recalled that Governor Bagudu at a public function in Birnin Kebbi claimed that, all the debt of gratuities were not accumulated by him saying when he came on board he met it and he has been all along using small available funds to pay gratuities despite the paucity of funds ” I have never owed pensions I always pay it promptly some governors are not even paying it not to talk of gratuities, we are saving monies for that purpose once we have enough we will pay, I hate to pay in trenches and it’s my wish that I pay every retired civil servant in the state he was quoted to have said such at the public function.
