The Urhobo Nationalist Movement, a pan-Urhobo political pressure group in Delta State, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure a substantive Minister for Niger Delta Affairs is in place before reconstituting the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
According to the group, this is to do away with the involvement of political hawks from frittering away the gains of the enormous contributions of the present Board members towards stabilizing the commission.
In a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting by the group in Warri on Monday and signed by Alhaji Barr Mumakhai Unagha, Chairman and Michael Spinson, Secretary, the group noted that the pressure being brought to bear on Mr. President by some interest groups were designed to satisfy primordial political interests which may not serve the general interest of the commission and the Niger Delta people in the long run.
The seven-point communiqué read, “Mr. President should not hurriedly compose or reconstitute the Board of Niger Delta Development Commission until a supervisory Minister in the Ministry of the Niger Delta is appointed and sworn in.
