A lawmaker representing Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has hailed the appointment of Prof. Godswill Obioma as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Examinations Council, NECO.
He said Obioma’s capacity to reposition the examination body for efficiency was never in doubt, especially coming at a time NECO was undergoing several administrative challenges, some of which threatens to undermine its operations.
According to the legislator, President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to appoint Obioma is quite commendable, because he would work at regaining the corporate integrity, reforming infrastructural and technological deficits, among other problems bedeviling the organisation.
He said Obioma’s wealth of experience, including previous contributions to education policy reforms in Nigeria puts him at a better stead to deliver on the fresh mandate.
He revealed that the new Registrar has already designed an eleven-point road map through which NECO hopes to re-ignite transparency and deliver quality examination to Nigerians.
“A distinguished product of Abia State, Prof. Obioma has spearheaded a number of policy reforms and institutional changes in Nigeria’s educational curriculum including; the 9-year Basic Education Curriculum, the Senior Secondary Education Curriculum, the 34 Senior Secondary Entrepreneur/Trade subjects, the 2014 Edition of the National Policy on Education, among others,“ Kalu stated on Monday in Abuja .
He also noted that Obioma had served as Chairman of Nigeria Education Roadmap of the Federal Ministry of Education and Executive Secretary, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC.
Recall that President Buhari recently approved the appointment of Prof Obioma as Registrar of NECO, following the sack of the former Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Charles Uwakwe for graft related issues .
