The Itori Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed most of the road accidents in the state to non-compliance of basic traffic rules and regulations by motorists.
Mr Aliyu Yahaya, the Itori Unit Commander of FRSC, entitled: “Safe Driving, Safe Arrival,’’ disclosed this at the Ember Months Flag-Off Campaign of the command on Tuesday at Ilaro garage, Ogun.
He said the negative attitude of some motorists contributed to numerous crashes which resulted to the unnecessary loss of lives and valuable property in the state.
Yahaya said many families had been devastated for losing their breadwinners to crashes, “the belief of many Nigerians that the ember months are evil and are characterised by various mishaps, was not true’’.
The FRSC Unit Commander said that there was need to sensitise and educate people as the ember months were the peak periods of road traffic movements, every year.
He said the country could not afford to be left behind in the 21st century where nations are in competition to achieve strong economic growth and development by creating a conducive environment for ease of doing business.
Also speaking, Mr Emmanuel Fagbenro, the FRSC state coordinator for Special Marshals, said that most of the crashes were caused by the motorists.
He said that the motorists should adhere to an average speed limit, to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
Fagbenro, however, implored motorists to drive in a way that would not endanger the lives of other road users.
Mr Oni Waheed, Divisional Crime Officer, Ilaro, also advised motorists to desist from speeding and drinking under the influence of alcohol.
Waheed also warned against indiscriminate parking on the roads, to prevent incoming vehicles from ramming into them.
