Flooding: Kogi marks structures, to relocate occupants to IDP camps

A don, Prof. Leke Oduwaye, on Monday urged Lagos State Government to prosecute owners of buildings blocking drainage right-of -way to guard against flooding.

Kogi State Government has marked residential structures that are susceptible to flood in order to enforce the evacuation of occupants to avoid a repeat of a human disaster in the state as the River Niger gains volume.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Obani Sunday, said that signs of the seasonal flooding by the River Niger were on the increase in recent times.

He told our correspondent in Lokoja that in spite of the threat of flood in the near future, the residents will soon be asked to relocate to the designated internally displaced camps as a temporal measure to avoid the devastating effects of the flood.

He expressed regret that some of the occupants of the structures were resisting the government’s repeated call to relocate to higher grounds in and around Lokoja for their own safety.
