Farmers association registers 84,000 members in Edo

The Edo chapter of the All Farmer Association of Nigeria (AFAN), says it has registered 84,000 farmers in the state, with a view to training them in modern farming techniques.

The Chairman of the association, Mr Emmanuel Odigie, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Sunday, that the aim was to ensure increased food production in the state.

Odigie said that the association was committed to ensuring agricultural revolution and production of raw materials for industrialists in the state.

He said that the registered farmers were drawn from the 192 wards in the state.

”To achieve this, we recently signed an MoU with a reputable organisation in Kaduna to train the farmers and supply us with irrigation motorcycles.

”This will enable the farmers to have regular water supply to their farms in order to ensure all year farming,” he said.

The chairman further said that the association had submitted a proposal to the Edo House of Assembly on how to stop destruction of crops by herdsmen in the state.

Odigie appealed to the State Government to allocate the prepared farm plots in Sobe, Owan West local Government Area of the state, to AFAN members for cultivation.

He also noted that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) provided two new tractors to the chapter in 2016, saying it had enabled the farmers to engage in commercial farming.
