No fewer than 55 divorce cases have been recorded in Enugu State, Chief Judge Justice Priscilla Emehelu, has said.

Emehelu made this known in her address at a special court session flagging-off the 2018/2019 legal year.

She said the cases were filed in the preceding legal year covering November 1, 2017 to September 31, 2018.

She also said that 3,503 cases were currently pending at the High Court while there were 5, 502 were in the Magistrate courts.

A breakdown showed that 16 cases were filed in the High Court while 39 were in the Magistrate Courts; when added to the pending divorce cases; it means that 69 matters were currently before the courts. The High court disposed of 15 cases while the Magistrate courts handled 17 within the period.

She explained that 3,157 cases pended before the High Court at the beginning of the legal year under review; in addition to another 1, 224 that were filed within the period, noting that a total of 878 were disposed of.
