DSS alleges plot of smear campaign against it

The State Security Service (SSS), self-styled as the Department of State Services (DSS), is the primary domestic intelligence agency of Nigeria.

The Department of State Service (DSS) says it has uncovered plans by some ”subversive” groups and individuals to undertake a negative media campaign against the service.

The secret police, however, threatened to deal with those engaged in the deliberate efforts to run the service down by making them to face the full wrath of the law if they don’t desist from doing so.

Spokesman of the secret police, Peter Afunanya, in a statement made available late last night, explained that the service has steadily monitored the activities of the perpetrators.

According to him, the perpetrators’ aim was to further use fake news, propaganda and malicious narratives through sponsored articles, among others, to undermine the agency.

Although Afunanya did not mention the name of the groups and individuals, newsmen understand that the spy agency was responding to a suit filed by a Lagos-based lawyer asking the court to change its name from ”DSS” to ”SSS”.

The lawyer, Tope Alabi in his August 23, 2021 suit marked FHC/L/CS/1071/21, asked a Federal High Court in Lagos to ban the State Security Service (SSS) from being addressed or addressing itself as ‘Department of State Service (DSS)’ without an amendment of the law.

It was also learnt that the service is angry over the claims of maltreatment made by the detained leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Afunanya’s statement read, ”The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered plans by some subversive groups and individuals to undertake a negative media campaign against the Service.

”The aim is to further use fake news, propaganda and malicious narratives through sponsored articles, among others, to undermine it.

”The Service has steadily monitored these activities, their perpetrators and therefore wish to inform the public to disregard the emerging trends and patterns.

”The Service reassures its commitment to the discharge of its mandate. It will not be distracted or silenced.

”Those engaged in the deliberate efforts to run it down are, however, advised to desist from doing so or be ready to face the full wrath of the law.”
