Condoms Day: 2% of 7,000 persons tested positive to HIV/AIDS in Benue

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Nigeria has said about two percent of the 7,000 persons that were subjected to HIV/AIDS counseling and testing in Benue State in the last one week tested positive to the HIV virus.

It also stated that as a result, AHF has distributed over 50,000 condoms to encourage correct and consistent use of condoms.

Dr. Joseph Shuaibu, Site Coordinator, AHF, Benue state office who disclosed this during an enlightenment campaign held at the mechanic village, Makurdi, on Thursday, said the foundation plans to distribute no fewer than 160, 000 within the month.

The development, he argued would reduce the spread and prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS.

He explained that the tests which were carried out as part of the buildup to the International condom day also exposed the need to step up campaigns of consistent use of condoms.

While he lamented that the use of condoms have dropped, he observed that the year’s theme ‘Safer sex is fun’, is intended to ensure the correct and consistent use of condoms by all.

AHF also offered HIV testing services and provided sanitary pads to the women folk as part of efforts at promoting personal hygiene.

Dr. Dura, Executive Secretary (ES) Benue State Action Committee on HIV/AIDS (BENSACA), observed that the use of condom is to be celebrated because it was both for family planning as well as prevention of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

He stated that Benue was prepared to partner with anyone working on HIV/AIDS activities.

Dura appealed to all concerned to join hands in the bid to control the spread of HIV/AIDS.
