‘How to end banditry in Zamfara’

Gunmen in the early hours of Friday stormed Birshin Fulani, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, and kidnapped a nursing mother of three children, Mrs Rukayyat Odedoyin.

A public commentator, Alhaji Ahmed Bakare, has faulted the Federal Government for not providing adequate security for the lives and properties of the residents of Zamfara State, saying that those blaming Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle over the rising spate of killings and kidnappings ravaging the entire state are miscalculating.

The commentator maintained that the blames on the Governor did not hold any water, saying that Matawalle inherited the mass killings and kidnappings from the past administration led by former Governor Abdul Aziz Yari which he was not a part of.

“Former Governor Yari would have ended these dastard acts before he left the throne if he has the interest of Zamfara residents in his mind but to the surprise of Nigerians, many people are blindly following his destructive policies to rubbish the government of Matawalle.

“We are not kids and we are in Zamfara state watching everything that is going on in the state but we don’t care because politics is a dirty game which means that the two political rivals can settle in Abuja or Kaduna leaving their followers blinded,” he said.

Bakare maintained that it is no longer a secret that the security of lives and properties in Nigeria is never in the hands of the state governments but entirely the business of the Federal Government.

“We are all aware that the state government dethroned and arrested three emirs and traditional leaders for allegedly sponsoring bandits in their areas and they are now undergoing trials in various courts in the state.

“Then what evidence or pieces of evidence do we have to declare that the elites in the state are not behind the dastard acts in the state. Let the government and security agencies come out and tell the people the undiluted truth about the banditry issue in the state”

“I am of the opinion that if the state government can specifically disclose the sponsors of these bandits, the matter would be half solved”

“So the people should blame the federal government and not Governor Matawalle for the failure to handle the security challenges in the state because the sites have no police or and security agency but the federal government,” he lamented.

“I am very much aware that the state governments provide more assistance to the security agencies in their various states than the federal government that claims to own the military and security agencies.

“How many operational vehicles and logistics have been donated to the security agencies in Zamfara state. I can recall that recently donated 200 operational vehicles to all the security agencies in the state.

“If the security agencies in the state can be sincere to themselves, what the state governments are spending for them is far more than what the Federal Government is spending on them.

“Have the people blaming him for the ugly situation gone through the genesis of banditry in the state?. What do they want the innocent Governor to do?

”I stand to be corrected if as a Governor, Matawalle should carry guns and ammunitions searching for bandits in their hideouts.

“We all are aware including those attacking the Governor that the banditry activities in the state are not the business of the common masses but the serious crimes remain with elites in the state.

“The fault of Governor Matawalle was that he claimed to know the elites behind the dastard acts but he refused to mention them but instead he swore with the Holy Quaran inviting them to do so equally if they are not involved in the banditry activities in the state.”

The public commentator noted that people should not blame the Governor especially now that the APC is divided in the state, pointing out that nobody cares to assist the Governor in his struggle against banditry in the state.

“The people fuelling the APC crisis in the state are supposed to be blamed because they do not want the state to be living in peace because their candidate was not at the helm of affairs, saying that any day the people secretes were exposed, that would be the day the state would regain its freedom from the bandits bedevilling Zamfara State,” he said.
