81-year-old man arrested with fake dollars in Katsina

An 81-year-old man, Abdurrahman Amadu of Fora Village in the Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State has been accused of being in possession of counterfeit United States dollars leading to his arraignment before a Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court.

Amadu, who was arraigned along with one Usman Yahaya, 49, on September 20, is billed to appear in court on Wednesday (today).

The two defendants were charged with the offences of criminal conspiracy and being in possession of currency suspected to be counterfeit.

According to the police First Information Report, Amadu’s troubles started on September when two men, namely, Alhaji Abdul Kadiri, 50, and Adamu Amadu, 40, of Dayi Village in the Malumfashi Local Government Area of the state, lodged a complaint against him with the police.

The complainants reportedly said that the accused deceived them that he had sighted their stolen cattle somewhere in Kaduna and that he would help them to recover the animals if they paid him a certain amount.

The police added that Amadu was subsequently traced and arrested.

The court heard that when a body search was conducted on Amadu, 34 fake $100 notes suspected to be counterfeit were recovered from him.

The police claimed that Amadu confessed during interrogation that he was given 41 $100 notes by Yahaya, a.k.a. Damaske of Farin Yaro Quarters, Katsina, who is said to be a Bureau de Change operator.

Yahaya was said to have also confessed to the crime, which the police said was contrary to Sections 9F of the Penal Code Law and Section 5(a),(b) and (c) of the Counterfeit Currency Special provision Act, LFN,2004.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, had told the court that investigation into the case was in progress prompting the adjournment of the case till Wednesday (today) for mention.
