Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) says it will begin an indefinite strike from Monday, November 13, 2017.

The president of the union, Usman Dutse; and Zone A coordinator, Kabiru Yunusa, jointly briefed journalists in Kaduna on Saturday shortly after a protracted National Executive Council meeting of ASUP which held at the Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State.

Dutse said the industrial action had become inevitable, as the federal government had failed to implement all the agreements it entered with the union since 2016.

The union lamented that despite the long period given to the government to address some of the issues it had raised, government did not consider it necessary to address ASUP’s demands for improved funding of polytechnic education in the country.

The ASUP president said that the union had no other choice than to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum issued earlier.

Among other things, ASUP is demanding the implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report on Polytechincs and the payment of shortfalls and personnel allowances.

The union is also protesting non-passage of the amended bill on the Polytechnic Act, infractions in the appointment of rectors, as well as unconducive working conditions in state-owned institutions.
