The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has urged Nigerians to desist from migrating illegally from the country or having the thought of absconding during pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
Dabiri-Erewa stated this in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the executive secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim commission, Rev Uja Tor Uja.
While congratulating Rev Uja on his appointment as executive secretary of the commission (NCPC), Dabiri-Erewa stated that her office will like to work with the commission to help fight Nigerians who migrate illegally from the country.
“Corruption is a canker warm that is destroying the nation, if we don’t tackle it now, it will destroy the young generations of Nigeria, we should join Mr President in the fight against corruption, because the fight does not belong to him alone.”
While responding to the senior special assistant to the president on diaspora, Rev Uja commended Hon. Dabiri-Erewa for her contributions to national development and stated that NCPC will be glad to work her team, adding that many Nigerians who stay illegally in Israel absconded during pilgrimage.
He added, “Abscondment limits one’s capacity and voice and this one of the things we are fighting, Nigerians are free to migrate to any country but it should be done legally, it doesn’t speak well of us. ”
Rev. Uja informed her that he would want to have a conference in Israel specially organize for Nigerians in diaspora February 2018.
He further added, “I believe we can work together, not just in Israel, but in many of our pilgrimage destinations”.
“Israel in particular rates Nigeria as one of their first countries of resort in all matters they deal with, we are not normally the biggest in number, but they find Nigerians the most useful and hardworking,” he averred.
Similarly, he urged Nigerians to desist from absconding during pilgrimage to Jerusalem or remove the thought of escaping through Libya or Morocco hoping to get a better life in Europe.
He however commended Nigerians in diaspora towards contributing to the nation’s development especially with the present economic challenges, and urged them to contribute to pilgrimage by sponsoring pilgrims to Jerusalem.
