The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected members of an armed gang in connection with the murder of Seiyefa Fred, a level 100 student of the Niger Delta University, in Yenagoa.
The 16-year-old female undergraduate of the Bayelsa state-owned university was shot dead in Amarata area of the state capital at about 8pm on November 9, 2018.
A police statement on Friday by DSP Asinim Butswat, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, gave the name of the suspects as Junior Daumunabo and Ayibakepreye Idionyo.
Butswat said that Daumunabo, aged 20, who also resides in Amarata, was apprehended on Friday with a locally made pistol through the assistance of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service.
“The suspect led police to arrest one Ayibakepreye Idionyo, ‘m’, 30 years, who allegedly supplied the locally made pistol.
“Upon interrogation, Junior Daumunabo confessed to be a member of the Greenland cult group, he also confessed that he was a member of the gang that shot and killed Seiyefa Fred,” Butswat said.
The police command said that efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the armed gang.
The gruesome murder of Seiyefa had sparked outrage in Bayelsa with residents bemoaning the rising cases of incessant killings, armed robberies and cult-related attacks and clashes in the state.
They were concerned that Yenagoa was becoming increasingly unsafe due to insecurity, and most shop owners close business as early as 7pm to avoid invasion by gun-totting hoodlums, even as perpetual blackout had continually provided cover for criminality to thrive.
