The Katsina State Police Command said on Sunday that its operatives had gunned down a suspected cattle rustler during an exchange of fire along Sakwattawa-Shawere cattle route.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, disclosed the development in a statement made available to journalists in Katsina.

According to him, one Ibrahim Gai of Aidun Hassan Village in the Danmusa Local Government Area of the state had reported to the police that some unidentified cattle rustlers invaded their settlement at about 3.30am on October 23, 2017 and stole their livestock.

Gambo said members of Operation Sharan-Daji were dispatched to the settlement and the cattle routes in the area, adding that the cattle rustlers, on sighting the team, engaged them in a gun duel during which a suspect died while his accomplices fled.

He further revealed that one AK-47 with 16 rounds of live ammunition, two magazines, four cows and one Boxer motorcycle with chassis number 60927 were recovered from the fleeing cattle rustlers.

The police spokesman said investigation had already begun into the incident.

Meanwhile, the command also disclosed that it had also arrested some suspected members of a notorious syndicate which specialised in carjacking in the state.

It gave the names of the suspects as Ahmed Mohammed of Kinkina Street, Unguwar Rimi, Kaduna State and Usman Mohammed of Kerau Quarters, Katsina State.

The command said the suspects were intercepts about 3am on October 26, 2017 at Kongolam Village, on the border of Katsina State and Niger Republic.

It said the suspects were attempting to escape into Niger Republic with a stolen Toyota 4Runner vehicle with registration number, ABJ 225 TL, which they allegedly stole from Abuja.

Police investigation reportedly revealed that the vehicle belonged to an official of the Standards Organisation Nigeria.

Isah said the suspects were making useful statements to the police to assist in its investigation.
