The Chairman of Bosso Local Government Area in Niger State, Architect Abubakar Gomna has urged Nigerians not to deceive themselves on government palliatives.
He said the people would continuously be deceiving themselves if they think palliatives from both federal, state and local governments can go round.
Gommna made the observation in Minna during a visit by executives and members of the Niger State Chapter of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) who came to the council’s Secretariat to distribute palliatives to the vulnerable.
Clearly reacting to the outrage on inadequate palliatives for Nigerians, the grassroot leader said even in developed countries of the world, the palliatives are given to those with lower income and are in need of it.
“We do not expect that the government can feed everybody as far as Nigeria context is concerned. The palliatives can never get to everybody.
People should not sit down and ask the government to do what they reasonably know that the government cannot do. At the end of the day, we end up deceiving ourselves”
While thanking the State Chapter of the Nigeria Society of Engineers for its gestures, he noted, ‘It is on record that NSE is the first professional body to provide palliatives for our people. We urge other professional bodies to key in and help the government by contributing their quota.”
Earlier, the state Chairperson, NSE, Engr. Elizabeth Jumoke Eterigho stated that the Association has identified 150 vulnerable people in the local government area to reach out to.
She lamented that though, the Government has provided a lot of palliatives, “but those who really need it are not the ones who get it.”
Expressing happiness, most of the beneficiaries said the palliatives are the first they have received since the lockdown.
