Adamawa: Police arrest 1,146 suspects, convict 446 in eight months

The Nigeria Police Force says its investigation shows that Boko Haram, Ansaru and other terror groups are getting support from some Nigerians.

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested 1,146 suspected high-profile criminal gangs and convicted 446 between January and September 2021.

The Command also said, about 720 of the suspects are awaiting trial, adding that the arrests were affected by the Anti-kidnapping Unit, Anti-Shilla Squad, CID Personnel, SIB and other Divisional Police operatives of the command, in conjunction with hunters, Pulaku and Vilante members.

The State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Adamu Alhaji, who made the disclosure during a news briefing on Monday at the police headquarters in Yola, said 21 suspects are also being held in connection with the recent killings of seven persons in Dasin Bwate, in Fufore LGA, over suspected witchcraft.

“The Command was able to dislodge and apprehend over 400 radical armed Shilla Boys and were charged to court. They are now remanded in prison custody,” he said, adding, “The Command has also apprehended over 121 kidnappers from across the State and rescued some kidnapped victims.”

The CP said the command also cracked and apprehended some notorious highway robbers terrorizing Numan-Gombe road, Numan-Jalingo road and Ngurore–Mayo Belwa road.

“The Command apprehended the notorious receiver of stolen properties, Alhaji Halilu Lafiya, alias SYB, and he has since been prosecuted and convicted”, the CP added.

He listed items recovered as 20 AK-47 rifles, three G3 rifles, two pump action guns, seven single barrel guns, 11 locally fabricated guns, 600 rounds of live ammunition, 115 cartridges, eight stolen motor vehicles, 18 tricycles, 11 motorcycles, as well as large quantities of hard drugs, intoxicating substances, and weeds.
