Arik Air suspends staff for extortion

The management of Arik Air has suspended with immediate effect one of its staff caught by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) soliciting a bribe at the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed International, Ikeja, Lagos, pending further investigations.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Arik Air stated that, while the management conducts its own internal investigation, the airline wishes to reassure FAAN of their cooperation on the matter, if further investigation is required.

“We fully support what FAAN is doing to rid our airports of this menace of corruption,” the airline stated.

The female staff of Arik Air was earlier this week apprehended while soliciting a bribe from a travelling passenger at the General Aviation Terminal, Lagos.

The arrest followed FAAN surveillance after recent embarrassing online videos where passengers complained of being extorted at the nation’s airport.

Meanwhile, management of FAAN after a meeting presided over by its Managing Director, Captain Rabiu Yadudu, on the matter, is said to have devised a multi-level strategy to curb the menace.

Capt Yadudu has directed airport managers to ensure all stakeholders in airports are properly sensitised on the new development.
